Machining for Heatherbrae industry

Heatherbrae is the industrial and transport strip on the Pacific Highway — truck dealers, heavy vehicle workshops, transport yards, earthmoving and equipment businesses, and trade suppliers. It’s about 40 minutes from our workshop.

Todd spent three years at Sandvik’s Heatherbrae plant setting up CNC lathes and mills, so he knows the strip and the kind of work that comes off it.

This is straight machine shop territory. Not much marine about it.

Heavy vehicle and plant work

Pins and bushes. The bread and butter of anything with a hydraulic arm on it. Turned to size in 4140 heat-treated, hardened tool steel where required, bronze or engineering plastic where a bush needs to be the sacrificial part.

Shafts. New shafts machined from a sample or a drawing, worn shafts re-sleeved, keyways cut, tapers turned.

Obsolete parts. Older plant and older trucks reach a point where the part simply isn’t available. We reverse engineer from the broken original — measure, model in Fusion 360, machine. Bring us what’s left of it.

Adaptor plates, mounts and brackets. Machined flat, drilled true, made to fit the first time. Sheet metal cut and fold comes through a partner facility with a guillotine and CNC press brake, and welding through the welders we work with.

Repeat runs. If it’s a part you replace regularly, tell us — a batch on CNC is cheaper per part than five separate one-offs, and we can hold the program so the next lot is quicker again.

Downtime is the real cost

For a transport or plant business, the part price is almost never the issue. The truck sitting in the yard is the issue.

Our machines run unattended overnight. Work that goes on in the afternoon is being cut while the shop is locked. For a two-man shop that’s what makes the lead times work — and if we can’t hit your deadline, we’ll say so up front rather than string you along.
